Can you add your Tesla to the Robotaxi network?
Not yet. What Tesla has said about letting owners add their cars to the Robotaxi network, the expected timeline, and what is still unknown about earnings.
By Fleetsly · Updated
Short answer: not yet. As of October 2026, Tesla owners can’t add their own cars to the Tesla Robotaxi network. Tesla has said it intends to, and the expected date has moved more than once.
What Tesla has said
- In 2025, Elon Musk said owners would be able to add their cars to the fleet and earn money from them, with 2026 as the target.
- In its Q1 2026 update, Tesla described the goal as eventually deploying unsupervised autonomy on both the Robotaxi fleet and customer-owned vehicles, without a date.
- Around Tesla’s Q3 2026 results, reports said the first customer-owned cars could join the network around the second quarter of 2027.
- A teardown of the Robotaxi app found code for enrolling individual cars by VIN, with statuses such as pending review and active. It doesn’t show who qualifies or how earnings are split.
What we still don’t know
- Which models and hardware will qualify.
- The revenue split between Tesla and the owner. Figures you see online are estimates, not Tesla’s terms.
- Who pays for cleaning, charging, insurance and repairs while the car is on the network.
- Which cities will be open to owner cars first.
How to prepare anyway
The economics of a car on a ride-hailing network don’t depend on who dispatches it. Fares, the platform’s cut, charging, cleaning, insurance and depreciation decide whether it makes money. Run your own assumptions in the earnings estimator, and read How much can a Model Y robotaxi earn per month? for the base case.
If you plan more than one car, the depot work is the same whichever network you join. Our guide How to manage a robotaxi fleet covers it.
