Robotaxi cleaning: how often and what it costs

Cleaning routines for driverless cars, what to check while you clean, and what cleaning costs per car per year in the base case.

By Fleetsly · Updated

With no driver on board, nobody tidies the car between rides. The next rider gets whatever the last one left behind, and a dirty car means bad ratings and fewer fares. Cleaning becomes one of the main jobs at a robotaxi depot, and one of its bigger running costs.

What cleaning costs one robotaxi

Cleaning per operating day$15.00
Operating days a year330
Cleaning a year$4,950
Per paid mile$0.15

In the estimator’s base case, cleaning costs more per year than insurance or parking. Try your own price per day in the earnings estimator.

How often to clean

  • A quick clean every day: trash, spills, seats and touch points, before the morning rush.
  • A deeper clean every week: floor mats, glass inside and out, upholstery.
  • Right away when a rider reports a mess.
  • By the number of rides: on busy cars, an extra clean after a set number of trips beats a fixed schedule.

Check the car while you clean

Cleaning is the one time someone looks closely at every seat and surface. Use it: check for damage left by riders, lost items, the charge port and the camera and sensor lenses. Take photos, so damage claims and lost items have proof. The robotaxi maintenance checklist lists what to look for.

Keep cleaning from causing downtime

Clean in the quiet hours, alongside charging, so a car never waits twice. A queue of dirty cars after a busy night is lost fares; see Robotaxi uptime for what an idle day costs.

Track it per car

Log every clean as a task on the car, with a photo. Over a month you will see which cars need cleaning most often, and whether your cleaning cost per paid mile is drifting up.
